Star Wars lightsaber fights become extra epic when set to Wonder Woman 1984’s Blue Monday remix. Nothing is more quintessential Star Wars than a good old fashioned lightsaber duel. The film franchise has seen many iconic duels throughout its history. In addition to dueling, each lightsaber says a lot about the Jedi wielding the iconic Star Wars weapons. This makes the fights a lot more complex and thrilling to watch.
Although Obi Wan and Darth Vader’s lightsaber duel on the Death Star wasn’t the first duel in the canon timeline, it was the first lightsaber fight ever show on the big screen. This tragic duo really upped the ante for epic lightsaber fights, especially when Obi-Wan faced off against his former student Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. Lest fans ever forget, another lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back led to one of the most famous reveals in film history, where Vader tells Luke he’s his father. The best lightsaber battles always advance the plot and characters forward in unexpected ways. Perhaps one of the best examples of this is Anakin ending up in the infamous Darth Vader suit after Obi-Wan left him for dead, burned and mutilated, on Mustafar.
While it might seem impossible to sum up the greatness of all nine Star Wars films in a single video, Twitter user Vordeel has accomplished the feat with a less than two minute video. The fan edit is set to the excellent Blue Monday remix used in the official Wonder Woman 1984 trailer. The video features epic lightsaber duels from the entire Skywalker saga as well as some of the franchise’s best space battles. Throw in Leia and Padme kicking butt with blasters and you’ve got one fantastic fan edit. Check it out below.
What’s particularly special about the fan edit is just how perfectly synced the music is with the lightsaber battles. The video also demonstrates that these epic battles weren’t really just about fighting, but as a means for the characters to grow and progress. Obi-Wan had to watch his mentor Qui-Gon perish at the hands of Darth Maul in order to become Anakin’s master. Anakin had to fall to the dark side and be defeated by Obi-Wan twice in order for Luke to redeem him in Return of the Jedi. Anakin’s original blue lightsaber later played a huge symbolic role in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. Rey truly discovered her Force powers for the first time when she wielded Anakin’s lightsaber in The Force Awakens to defeat Kylo Ren. Luke would also wield his father’s saber against Kylo in The Last Jedi, and Rey would use it to finally defeat Palpatine once and for all in The Rise of Skywalker.
Ultimately, it’s not the lightsaber duels themselves that are epic in Star Wars, but rather the characters wielding the weapons. It’s difficult to imagine how future Star Wars films will ever manage to top the epic battles now firmly entrenched in Star Wars canon. Regardless of what the future holds for the franchise, the lightsaber duels of the past will forever remain the epitome of iconic.
